Saint John School sixth, seventh, and eighth graders participate each year in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which is sponsored locally by the San Diego Union-Tribune. Every student participates in a classroom spelling bee within his or her language arts class by November or early December. Six students and two alternates are chosen from each of the homeroom classes (6M, 6K, 7M, 7H, 8J, and 8S) to participate in the school spelling bee, which will be held January 30 at 1:30 in the parish hall during Catholic Schools Week. The winner of the school bee competes against about 100 other San Diego area school winners in the county bee March 15, and the winner of the county bee receives a paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national bee. Just to get to the school and county bees is a great honor, and I encourage all students to begin studying now. You can bet that spellers at other schools are already underway! This will be the 13th year that Saint John School will send a student to the county bee, and it is always a memorable event.
Here's a game plan for all the competitors: 1) Visit the following website: www.spellingbee.com 2) Click on the "Students and Parents" menu at top of webpage. 3) Click on "study tips" on left side on page-- the next page will offer a variety of links to click on, all of which provide valuable study advice and resources.
The actual list of words that will be used during the classroom and school bees will be distributed either through your language arts class, or you can see the school spelling bee coordinator, Mrs. Roberts, directly.
Please feel free to contact Mrs. Roberts with any questions you may have.
